The Nudes You've Been Waiting For

Got nudes? Until recently, shopping for "nude" anything typically meant that I was looking at products that cater to the much lighter (whiter) skin tones - from panty hose, to lipstick, to shape wear, even crayons. Many of us have grown up used to this discrepancy, trying to make do with what's available to us, while simultaneously thinking, "Is there nothing made with us women of color in mind?" Thankfully, we're seeing more and more representation in the beauty industry wit

    New Year, New Me?

2017 is almost over. I haven't written in a while, but I figured I would share some of my goals for this year with you all! These are things I've been working on already, so they're not really "New Year's Resolutions", but I'll be carrying them over into 2018! 1. Read. Because knowledge is power. Plus I feel like an uncultured idiot, sometimes. 2. Travel. Internationally, domestically, alone, with bae, spontaneously, planned, whatever! 3. Drink more water. I am horrible at it

When You've Failed Your Immigrant Parents

It never really hit me until recently that I was a daughter of immigrants. It never really hit me that they came to this country, leaving theirs, for what they thought would be a better life. I never truly took the time to reflect on the struggles they may have faced, and it kind of makes me sad to think about it. I feel horrible and guilty, because looking back, I haven't made them proud the way I was supposed to. At least the way I think I was supposed to. My mother and fat

    Elizabeth Acevedo: The Inspiration

If you've been following me for a while on Instagram, you'll know that this page was inspired by Elizabeth Acevedo. I didn't know who she was until one day, September 22, 2015, when a friend shared a video of hers on Facebook. I watched the video, a performance of her poem "Afro-Latina", and it was like my entire world shifted. I had never felt so understood by someone and it was like I had finally found a box I could check myself into. An identity I never knew I could claim.

15 T-Shirt Brands Every Afro-Latina Needs In Her Closet

I like making lists. For everything. Christmas gifts. Lippies I want to try. Books I need to get my hands on. And t-shirts. I've acquired a plethora of tees throughout my life, but as I ventured into this journey of identity seeking, I figured it was right to make a list of t-shirts I should rock. I've accumulated a wholeeee lot of companies and shirts on this list, and I thought I'd share some with you all, especially now that the holidays are coming up! Not all of my flagge

    "I Hated My Hair"

I have a younger sister who is fifteen years old. She looks just like me, and she's enjoys unicorns, baking, and YouTube. There might be a few more things I missed, but she'll live. She had a paper due in school this week about a personal crossing or a journey that changed how she lives or perceives things, and she mentioned that she was going to mention her natural hair journey. She's never had a relaxer, but still struggled with accepting her natural hair until recently, as

    Why I Hate Being "Afrolatina"

When labeling or identifying a woman, we all pretty much know what to expect. And there are 50 bajillion types of women in this world, so you could gather 50 people and they might all have a different picture in their head if you actually went ahead and asked them to think of a woman. I find that there is no need add any extra adjectives to validate my gender when identifying myself. But for some reason, as soon as someone mentions "Latina", three quarters of the world pictur

Reina Rebelde: The Best of Both Worlds

I'd say that one of the best parts about being an afrolatina is that you have the best of both worlds *cues Hannah Montana*. By a stroke of luck, I've found a makeup brand that is all about that! Reina Rebelde was founded by Regina Merson (an Ivy league educated, Mexican lawyer), and prides itself in representing "today's mujer" and the duality that comes with it. Come on. Isn't it perfect?! She's speaking to my afrolatina soul here, letting us all know that you don't have to

    MIZIZI: Streetwear for the Diaspora

Hey guys! Welcome back! Let me just say - I get so excited when I find dope things on social media because it means I get to share it with you guys! Today I'm going to share MIZIZI, an awesome streetwear brand that you may or may not have seen on social media this past month. MIZIZI was actually brought to my attention by one of my friends. He sent me an Instagram post via DM about their upcoming Afrolatinx collection and said, "Cop cop cop." LOL and of course I started plott

    First Protective Style

As Spanish speaking Latinas, we tend to grow up with lots of conversation and bias surrounding our hair ... and others' hair. How it's bad (or good), how it needs a relaxer (or a brush), how it's fake (or too natural - *rolls eyes*). Until around this year, I had never seen a Spanish speaking Latina (in MY real world) wearing a protective style such as box braids, feed in braids, or twists. Nor did I truly know anything about them until college. Me being a semi hair virgin (I

    Getting Pulled Over

Most of us have witnessed (via social media or in real life) the tremendous amount of police brutality and killings that occur on a day to day basis, especially in the last few years. Sandra Bland, Philando Castile, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Alton Sterling ... the list goes on. Me? My police interactions have been very few. Once with my mother when I was a teenager. Once, by myself, many years ago, and twice more in the last year with other people. All whilst driving. Altho

    Psuedo Makeup Haul!

Makeup. If you know me personally, you'll know that I was the ultimate tomboy forever and didn't discover the amazingness that is makeup until college. I still don't consider myself an expert, or anything, but I LOVE me a good lippie. Being the broke human services worker that I am, it isn't quite often that I'm able to splurge on makeup. (Plus, I spend most of my money on food, anyway.) Luckily, this is my birthday month and I got TWO free gifts to add to my collection. Henc

Hi, you! Welcome to Your Average Afrolatina. I'm sure you're asking yourself, " ... The average afrolatina? Does she even know what she's talking about?" Just stay with me. Stop, right now. Think of how you would describe the characteristics of the average afrolatina to a complete stranger.
